The Kogi Commissioner for Education, Hon. Wemi Jones, has advised students in the state against indulging in any form of social vices.
Jones gave the advice on Monday at the 2023/2024 Matriculation ceremony of Gloryland Polytechnic Anoka, Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The commissioner admonished the matriculating students to focus on their studies and shun all vices that could hinder their educational development.
He noted that the state government had invested so much in education to enable the students achieved whatever they want to become in life.
“What the government and your parents required of you is to focus on your studies and be good ambassadors of the state.
“Cultism, thuggery and other social vices would not just affect your educational development but also your mental growth.
“Kogi State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Gov Ahmed Ododo, would not condone any form of social vices.
“Whosoever is caught would be dealt with in accordance with the State Education Law,” Jones warned.
The commissioner appreciated the Proprietress of the Polytechnic for raising a good standard in the school, and urged other private institutions in the state to emulate the school.
He urged owners of private higher institutions in state to get all the relevant requirements for the establishment of higher institution in the country.
He noted that the state government would not hesitate to shut down all substandard private institutions discovered to have been operating illegal in the state.
Earlier, the Proprietress of Gloryland Polytechnic Ankpa, Hajia Vivian Idama, said students of the school were trained mentally, morally and skillfully to face any of life challenges.
Idama stressed that the products of the institution were job creators as they were being equipped with entrepreneurial instincts and skills.
She implored the matriculating students to maintain the peace that the Institution is known for, and warned that whosoever engaged in cultism, prostitution or other social vices would not be spared.
She added: “Any students who engage in or planning to engage in cultism, extortion, intimidation, prostitution, indecent dressing, and fighting among others would be shown the way out of the Institution”.
