As the Country continue to grapple with poor governance, insecurity and all forms of anti social behaviours, Journalists have been challenged to use their reportage to promote peace and to hold government accountable to the people.
The ActionAid Nigeria gave the challenge on Thursday at a 2-day Media Master class training for Journalists in Kogi and Nasarawa States.
The training which was organised by ActionAid Nigeria held between 17th and 18th August, 2021 at Kini Country-Inn Akwanga, has the theme; Passing the Baton: Co-creating Sustainable Peace through Journalism in pursuance of the System and Structure Strengthening Approach against Radicalization to Violent Extremism (SARVE II) Project
The communique issued at the end of the training urged Journalists to ensure fairness, equity and justice in their reportage
” Journalists should endeavour to promote peace and to undertake investigative reports in order to hold government accountable to the people
“They should Place national interest above personal interest and they should use reportage to enshrine good governance and to build strong institutions .
While asking Journalists to look inside and outside the box to enhance their financial stability urged them to consciously create personal brands that can upstage their career
The communique however, noted that in order to remain relevant in the digital age, Journalists should continue to sharpen their skills and to maximize various social media platforms for their personal brands.
It encourages them to master the art of writing reliable and acceptable proposal for funds from Donor Agencies to execute stories that could solve identified challenges facing the society, calls for clear understanding of the seventeen components of the Sustainable Development Goals SDG so as to advance their careers.
