DELSUTH: Medical Alumni Association Constitutes Board
Medical Graduates of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have formed their alumni association.
This is coming on the backdrop of several stakeholder meetings which culminated in the 21 October 2023 decision to constitute the Interim Board of Directors.
The initiative aims to bring together medical graduates from DELSU, fostering a vibrant and supportive community that cherishes the memories and experiences shared during their time at the university. Christened Delta State University Medical Students’ Alumni Association (DUMSAA), the association will serve as a platform to reconnect, network, and collaborate with fellow graduates.
Membership of the Board include: Dr Kennedy O. Obohwemu (Chairman); Dr. Akponana Mudiaga (Vice Chairman, Internal Affairs); Dr. Kenneth Ikwuazom (Vice Chairman, Foreign Affairs); and Dr. Igben O. Vincent-Jr (Secretary General); Dr. (Mrs). Esimieburu Ogbobine (Assistant Secretary General); Dr. Austin-Jemifor O. Amanda (Treasurer/Financial Secretary); Dr. Uchefe Atuyota (Chief Editor); Dr. Ohwokewho George (Public Relations Officer); Dr. Igheghe Freedom (Welfare Director); Dr. Jeroh Oghenevwogaga (Academic Director); and Dr. Joseph Nsikan Promise (Social Director).
Other members were: Dr. Hilary Nwadozie; Capt. (Dr.) Olodu Chuks; Dr. Anyahaebizi Isreal; Dr. Okpala Anthony; Dr. Oliseyenum Godspower; Dr. Chinedu Pete Iwegbue; Dr. Nathaniel Oserada; Dr. Udoka Chukwura; and Dr. Oserada Nathaniel Ojitobo.
A Constitution Drafting Committee was established, membership of which consists of the following: Dr. Francis Campbell, Dr. Enerho Freedom, Dr. Akpowaye Akpomiemie, and Dr. Anderson Najomoh.
Others include: Dr Emiko Ofiokponye, Dr. Izu Edesiri, Dr. Abel Clement Efe, Dr. Solomon Edugho, Dr. Mogbolu Wisdom, Dr. Egun Emmanuel, and Dr. Ugbeta Obaro Evans.
Speaking on the historic occasion, the newly elected Board Chair Dr. Kennedy Oberhiri Obohwemu, who spearheaded the campaign to form the alumni association, echoed the sentiments of DELSU medical graduates around the world that the association was long overdue.
“DUMSAA has the potential to make a significant impact, not only on our own lives but also on the future of DELSUTH. The involvement and participation of members are crucial to the success of this endeavour.
“We look forward to rekindling old friendships, forging new ones, and collectively contributing to the continued excellence of our beloved DELSUTH,” he said.
He added that DUMSAA is more than just an organization; it is a vibrant community of individuals who share a common passion for medicine, a commitment to lifelong learning, and a desire to give back to the field and the next generation of healthcare professionals.
“Starting an alumni association from scratch requires careful planning, dedication, and a strategic approach. Our association thrives on the active participation and engagement of its members.
“We implore all members to contribute their quota to the development of this association.
“We encourage everyone to share ideas, insights, and expertise as we work together to strengthen the bonds of our medical school community and address pending issues of the association, among which are membership drive, drafting of Constitution, registration with DELSU authorities, website development, alumni database, mentorship of medical students, and sundry issues,” he said.
In his remarks, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Emmanuel Odokuma, welcomed the decision to form the alumni association.
“The establishment of this association is a significant milestone, one that will strengthen our bonds, foster collaboration, and further the legacy of our medical school.
“It is an exciting step, and I extend my warmest welcome to all our medical alumni,” the Provost said.
Professor P. S. Igbigbi, the only professor of Dermatoglyphics in Sub-Saharan Africa, who laid the foundation for what is DELSU medical school today, could not hide his joy at what his prodigies have achieved.
According to him, alumni play a pivotal role in the growth and success of the educational institution.
“Their collective experience, wisdom, and achievements are a source of inspiration for our current students, faculty, and staff. I look forward to the incredible contributions this association will make to our college’s continued excellence,” he said.
Since the first set of medical doctors graduated in September 2011, DELSU medical school has grown in leaps and bounds. DELSU medical school has a rich history of producing exceptional healthcare leaders, researchers, and specialists and practitioners who have made a significant impact on the field of medicine.
As alumni, medical graduates both at home and abroad, are an integral part of this legacy, and their achievements continue to inspire generations.
Some of the key objectives and benefits of joining the alumni association include the opportunity to connect with fellow alumni, create professional connections, and explore potential career opportunities within the extensive alumni network; giving back to the medical school by offering guidance and mentorship to current students, helping them navigate their academic and career journeys; participating in exciting reunions, workshops, and events designed to celebrate our shared history and support the ongoing commitment to education and personal growth; contributing to the development of the university by supporting scholarships, research projects, and community outreach programs; staying informed about the latest developments at the university, access to library resources, and benefits from career services even after graduation.
