There is palpable fears, anguish and wailings across the Irunda- Ile in Yagba East Local Government Area as four youths were mowed down, two by the bandits and two allegedly by the Nigerian Police.
The tragedy occured on Wednesday morning as bandits terrorizing the community in recent time, struck and shot to death two vigilante youth who mustered courage to repel them.
According to the locals , as the news of the death of the youths filtered to the village, the youths mobilized and embarked on peaceful protest to draw authorities to their plight.
The locals explained that the police who were on patrol in the area were asked to give them Support to pursue the fleeing bandits to their hideouts, but , the police refused .
The locals added that in ensuing melee, the police guns accidentally fired and killed two instantly ,while others were hit with various degrees of wounds.
According to a community leader, Sunday Oni David” As the protest was ongoing, some policemen came to the scene and were urged to followed the path of the bandits.
”They informed the police of the attack and urged them to assist the community. The police refused; prompting the youths to engage them in heated arguments.
”The arguments escalated, and in the process there was an accidental discharge leading to the death of the two young men”
Meanwhile, the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara rtd, confirmed the bandits attack in the community, said the angle of the police struggling with the protesting youths was not made known to him.
