The Senator representing Kogi west senatorial zone, Sunday Steve Karimi has launched a free shuttle bus service in Lokoja, Kogi State, in a move aimed at easing the rising cost of transportation for residents.
The initiative, launched under the Karimi Cares programme, was formally flagged off on Wednesday at Up-Garage, traditional area of Lokoja, the state capital.
The launch featured a symbolic ride in a fully air-conditioned shuttle bus, which conveyed residents from Up-Garage through major parts of the city to Felele, marking the commencement of the service.
The free transport scheme is the first phase of the Karimi Cares Initiative and is targeted at civil servants, students, traders and other residents who rely heavily on public transportation.
According to the organisers, the shuttle will operate twice daily during peak periods. Morning trips will run from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., while evening operations will run from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The designated route will cover the corridor from Nigeria Army Barracks through Lokoja New Market to Nataco Junction.
Speaking at the event, former APC Chairman, Alhaji Maikudi Bature, urged residents not to be swayed by election-time gifts, saying Karimi had made significant contributions to the people.
Bature recalled the senator’s provision of water during the Ramadan fasting period and said he expected the senator to deliver more interventions.
The APC leader in Kogi West, Commodore Folorunsho Daniel (Rtd.), also praised the initiative, saying Karimi remained committed to the welfare of Lokoja residents.
Daniel said more shuttle buses would be provided if Karimi secures a second term, while thanking residents for their continued support.
The launch drew residents who lined the streets as the bus passed through parts of Lokoja. Christian and Muslim prayers were also offered for the peaceful commencement of the service.
The organisers said the Karimi Cares Initiative will go beyond transportation, with additional interventions planned to help residents cope with economic pressures.
The initiative comes amid continuing concerns over the impact of fuel subsidy removal on households and businesses.
With the commencement of the service, residents along the designated route can now access free shuttle transportation during the morning and evening peak periods.
