Hon. Halims attends Democracy Day public lecture, promises big dividends.
It was an honour to participate in a high profile Nigeria’s 27th Uninterrupted Democracy Public Lecture in Abuja yesterday.
Looking back to 1999, the journey hasn’t been without challenges but the resilience of our democratic institutions and perseverance as a people is something to celebrate. Democracy is not a destination, it’s a continuous walk that we must take together irrespective of the current challenges bedeviling us as a nation.
Being the longest uninterrupted democracy in our nationhood, I listened keenly to my elder brother who doubles as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation(SGF), HE Sen Dr. George Akume as he made his presentations and I am proud to say he is a round peg placed in a round hole.
June 12 is arguably the most symbolic date in Nigeria’s modern political history as it reminds us that a united Nigeria; free of ethnic, social, class and religious bigotry, is possible. The ultimate sacrifice of Chief MKO Abiola and other pro-democracy activists who formed NADECO should always be an inspiration for us to cherish the journey so far and I pray that the dreams of our forefathers are never left to ruins.
