The passage of the constitutional alterations on the State Police Bill by the Kogi State House of Assembly is commendable.
Security is a collective responsibility; a secured environment guarantees a peaceful society. The debate on the creation of State Police has moved forward, and the constitutional requirement of passage by 24 States is now encouraging and deserves commendation from well-meaning Nigerians.
The creation of State Police will greatly assist in preventing and countering violent extremism (PCVE) at the state level, as various communities will be involved in securing their own communities.
We call on the National Assembly to conclude all legislative processes without further delay. We also urge the Kogi State Government to set up a Review and Implementation Committee to work out modalities for its successful implementation when it becomes an Act.
