international Safety Day : ISPN advocates enforcement of safety protocols in industrial, residential complexes.
The Institute of Safety professionals of Nigeria ISPN kogi state Branch has advocated for stiff sanctions for violators of its safety protocols in industrial and Residential complexes to avert dangers posed to occupants.
The Chairman of the Institute in Kogi state, Elder Friday Sani aka Makama, made the disclosure when he paid advocacy visit to the Chairman of NUJ in kogi state, Comrade Seidu Ademu to mark the 2026 International Safely Day on Tuesday in Lokoja.
Elder Friday Sani noted that the importance of adhering to safety protocols cannot be overemphasized as it serves to protect lives of residents and visitors to the complex.
He said , despite the importance of safety protocols to human and equipment protections, the owners of the edifices and approving agencies often overlooked it with reckless abandonment.
He disclosed that it was mandatory in the code for property owners to comply with approving agencies before construction.
He added that safety as defined by the Institute is the state of being protected from dangers, harm or risk which involves implementing measures to prevent accidents and ensure physical, emotional or environmental wellbeing of citizens.
He said the advocacy visit to NUJ is to create awareness and for the people to begin to do the right thing by ensuring safety protocols are observed at all times.
He added that his visit to NUJ was apt, as Journalism profession carries a lot of professional hazards, charging them to embellish safety protocols in their day to day activities.
According to him, journalists ought to be equipped with the protocols in their daily hound for news so as to Safely report events and not to be reported.
He said adhering to safety protocols is sine qua non for Journalists and citizenry in their engagement with the society.
He called on policy markers and regulators to ensure that every property conforms to the safety protocols as enshrined in the Institute ‘s code of engagement, before granting approval for the construction of property.
Sani described the incessant building collapse and inferno to property as a neglect to abide to safety protocols.
” Imagine the frequent building collapses and rampant fire incidences on property and the firefighters being unable to access the property. If the said property had complied with safety protocols, the firefighters would be able to access the property in real time , but , most often they are hampered by this negligence.” He cautioned.
He pledged to collaborate with the NUJ, as the forth estate of the realm to propagate the message to people to ensure safety at work places and in the homes.
Sani , however, commended Governor Usman Ododo for the premium placed on the Institute as demonstrated by making sure that Kogi state became a branch of the Institute, assuring that his effort would be complemented by strict compliance to safety codes.
Responding, the NUJ chairman, Comrade Seidu Ademu thanked him for the visit and assured that his members will continue to escalate the message to the citizens to avert avoidable harms
According to him, safety protocol is very important to Journalists in their daily routine as they traverse dangerous zones to report events.
He said, as a body , NUJ is ready to collaborate with the Institute to disseminate reliable information that will improve the perspective of the people to safety protocols.
