The Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution CHRCR has condemned the alleged arrest and detention of the Publisher KogiReport online Opeyemi Owoeye by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in kogi state.
The Executive Director of CHRCR , Comrade Idris Miliki Abdul in a press statement made available to Treasuretimes on Friday in Lokoja, decried the abuse of power by an alleged House of Representatives member from Yagba federal constituency over a story published by the blogger.
According to him, “It is a worrisome development, unnecessary and uncalled for , in a civilize society, this act of illegality is condemnable, in all ramifications.
” The Constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria provides for freedom of speech and for citizens to hold opinions. For a journalist performing his constitutional duty, to be arrested, is regrettable. We call for his immediate release in the interest of justice and fairness..
*We call on journalists across the country to boycott all activities of those involved in this illegal arrest and detention. When journalists write favorable stories they are ignored by policy and, but when they feel other wise they embarked on harassment and Intimidation.
” We wish to warn politicians as we are gradually approaching the 2027, general elections and electoral activities, intimidating and harassment of citizens and particularly journalists would not be tolerated” He chastised.
