The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in collaboration with the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and Christian Blind Mission International (CBM), has trained 100 persons with disabilities on digital skills, online safety and opportunities for earning income online.
The training formed part of the second edition of the Digital Citizenship Training for Persons with Disabilities, which was held over two days.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening digital inclusion and ensuring that persons with disabilities are able to participate meaningfully in Nigeria’s expanding digital economy.
Speaking at the programme, the NCC Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Aminu Maida, represented by the Director of Digital Economy, Helen Obi, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring that no segment of the population is excluded from the country’s digital transformation.
Ms Obi said the commission recognised the importance of equipping persons with disabilities with the knowledge and skills required to navigate the digital environment safely and productively.
The participants were trained in digital skills, online safety and ways of leveraging digital platforms to create economic opportunities.
The collaboration with LASODA and CBM also highlights the importance of partnerships among government institutions, disability-focused organisations and other stakeholders in advancing digital accessibility and inclusion.
The NCC said the programme was part of its broader efforts to promote an inclusive digital economy in which persons with disabilities can access digital tools, acquire relevant skills and benefit from emerging opportunities.
The commission reiterated that Nigeria’s digital transformation must be broad-based and accessible to all, including persons with disabilities.
