Hon. Umar Yahaya is the Member representing Omala State Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly. At a time when many citizens have begun to lose faith in the ballot, his tenure has become the clearest example of what representation ought to be: accessible, purposeful, and backed by verifiable results.
From the moment he assumed office, Hon. Yahaya set out to change the old narrative of Omala. That change is no longer a promise. It is seen in the roads that now connect communities, the hospital that now serves the sick, the boreholes that now deliver clean water, and in the hundreds of lives that have been lifted through direct empowerment.
His work has earned him wide recognition. He was honoured as “Best Lawmaker of the Year 2024” by The Nigerian Post Newspaper for his exceptional legislative performance and dedication to his people. He also emerged “Outstanding State Legislator of The Year” at the 4th Nigeria Service Awards in Abuja, having topped public nominations and votes across the country. In 2025, stakeholders further commended him for sponsoring landmark bills on free maternal and neonatal healthcare, local content, and environmental sanitation, all aimed at improving the welfare of Kogi citizens.
Hon. Yahaya understands that development begins with access. Across Omala, his footprints are visible. The Abejukolo Township Road has improved movement and commerce within the constituency. The Ogodu District Hospital now provides critical healthcare services to families who once traveled long distances for treatment. The Egbachi dual-purpose borehole has brought clean drinking water to the community and serves the burial ground as well. To improve security and support night activities, he installed solar-powered lights in worship centers and villages across all 11 wards. He is also personally constructing motorized boreholes in every ward to reduce waterborne diseases and ensure no community is left behind. In addition, work is ongoing on a Police Post in Olaedehi and plans are advanced for a Town Hall and Cottage Hospital in Abejukolo.
Education sits at the heart of his agenda. Through his Educational Support Program, more than 300 students have been registered for JAMB with all costs covered by him. The best JAMB candidate from Omala receives full tuition sponsorship through any Nigerian tertiary institution. He has also awarded scholarships to 27 students in various tertiary institutions across Kogi State, provided support for WAEC, and supplied learning materials to boost enrollment and retention. Understanding the demands of a digital age, he launched a Computer Training Program that has equipped students with digital literacy skills and distributed laptops to beneficiaries, giving young people the tools to compete beyond Omala.
Beyond infrastructure and education, Hon. Yahaya has invested heavily in people. Over 400 individuals across the wards of Omala have received cash grants and farming tools to support their livelihoods. He has rolled out skill acquisition programs in tailoring, ICT, and modern agricultural practices for women and youth, creating pathways to self-reliance. In healthcare, he has championed increased funding for primary health centers and pushed for policies that expand access, especially for mothers and children.
In the Kogi State House of Assembly, he has been a proactive voice. He has sponsored and co-sponsored bills and motions that address the direct needs of Omala, particularly in rural infrastructure and healthcare. To remain close to his people, he established a constituency office that ensures direct engagement and quick response to concerns.
This style of leadership, more work, less noise, is why constituents call him “Connect.” The name reflects his accessibility and his unique ability to bridge government and the grassroots.
As the APC House of Assembly Candidate for Omala in the forthcoming elections, Hon. Yahaya’s aspiration enjoys support that cuts across political parties, tribes, and religion. Community leaders and political observers note that his record of tangible projects has made his re-election almost a certainty even before the ballots are cast. Editors have described him as the most resourceful political leader Omala has ever had, and as the representative who has delivered more infrastructure to the constituency, both personally and through attracted projects, than any other individual before him.
In an era when public trust in politics is low, Hon. Umar Yahaya offers proof that representation can still work. He is not only accessible. His impact, when measured against the democracy dividends he has attracted, remains unequalled.
From building hospitals and police stations, to paying scholarships and covering JAMB and WAEC, to empowering women and youth, he has turned promises into projects and hope into reality.
