NGO advocates inclusive education for persons with special needs

‎The  ‎Learning Through Skills Acquisition Initiative (LETSAI), in collaboration with the Christoffel
Blinden Mission  CBM, on Tuesday began a 2-day Media Engagement and Training for Journalists on Disability Law in Kogi State, with a call for accurate and ethical reporting on disability issues.

‎

‎The training, themed “Engagement And Training For Journalists On Disability Law In Kogi State,” is aimed at improving journalists’ knowledge of disability rights and strengthening collaboration between the media and the disability community.

‎Grace Olomiwe, Communications Coordinator of CBM, said journalists play a critical role in shaping public perception on disability.

‎

‎“Journalists have the power to change narratives. Your reporting can either promote inclusion or reinforce stigma and discrimination against persons with disabilities,” Olomiwe said.

‎

‎She explained that the training would equip participants with the tools to report disability issues using human rights and legal frameworks, especially the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act, 2018.

‎

‎Olomiwe added that CBM is working to improve collaboration between journalists and disability advocates in Kogi State to ensure that the voices of persons with disabilities are heard and their rights are protected.

‎

‎“Through this engagement, we hope to build a pool of journalists who will champion inclusive reporting and hold duty-bearers accountable on disability rights,” she said.

‎

‎Participants are expected to learn best practices on language, sensitivity, and story angles that promote dignity and avoid stereotypes.

‎

‎The 2-day engagement will feature sessions on disability law, inclusive language, and strategies for effective collaboration between the media and disability organizations.

‎

‎Selected media practitioners and persons with disabilities are participating in the 2-day workshop.
