The Kogi State Government has commiserated with the families of six persons who lost their lives in a fatal road crash along the Kabba–Odo Ape Road in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area on Saturday, while wishing the two injured victims a speedy recovery.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, in a statement on Sunday, conveyed the deep sadness of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo over the tragedy, describing the loss of lives as painful and unfortunate.
The crash, which involved a truck and a commercial vehicle, occurred on Saturday, with the Federal Road Safety Corps confirming that six persons died while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital, Kabba.
Fanwo said the Governor shares in the grief of the affected families and communities, praying God to grant eternal rest to the deceased and give their loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
He urged motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads, particularly as the FRSC identified speeding as a contributing factor to the crash. He warned that reckless driving, dangerous overtaking and driving while fatigued can turn ordinary journeys into tragedies.
The Commissioner also called on the Federal Road Safety Corps to intensify enforcement against over-speeding on highways across the State, while strengthening public enlightenment and roadside monitoring to deter motorists from violating speed limits.
He said the call was necessary to complement the existing efforts of the FRSC and other stakeholders towards reducing road crashes and protecting lives, noting that Kogi State remains committed to working with relevant agencies to improve road safety.
Fanwo appealed to motorists to make safety their priority, stressing that no destination is worth risking human lives.
He wished the injured victims a full and speedy recovery and urged all road users to observe traffic regulations and exercise patience and responsibility while using the highways.
